Brandon Hills Vineyard
David Blackwell, a commercial pilot, and his wife Pam an anesthetist, founded what is now known as Brandon Hills Vineyard. After returning from a trip to Sonoma in the spring of 2002, Pam and David toured the wineries that existed then in North Carolina. Entranced by the unique ambiance of each winery as well as the friendliness of their owners, they sought to create something similar and began a quest to obtain suitable farmland.
While they searched, Pam and David enrolled in Surry Community College's Enology program, attended seminars and traveled to wine producing regions worldwide to gain the knowledge base for their new endeavor. The property was purchased in February 2005 and was quickly prepared to plant in that spring.
They originally planted Barbera, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Pinot Gris. Brandon Hills Vineyard's first harvest was in 2007 and the tasting room opened in July 2009.
